One of the things I struggled with in the design of the Shaman's "disciples" was how they should wear their hair. It occurred to me that many religious and quasi-religious movements require their followers to wear their hair in a distinctive style and it therefore seemed appropriate for the Shaman's followers to have a style of their own, too.
Of course, the disciples are not strictly speaking part of a religion and certainly not part of any recognised religion that exists in the real-world and so I wanted something that was not only distinctive but also which wouldn't suggest an affiliation with any real-world orthodoxy. Logical enough, in theory, but quite difficult to put into practice by the time you've eliminated shaved heads, top-knots, pony-tails, uncut hair and plaits.
Eventually, I decided upon the triple strands bound by metal rings but unbraided, partly because three has long been considered a magical number and partly because I thought they would look dramatic if the characters ever need to leap around. (Which, without wanting to give too much away, they sometimes do!)
