I thought a lot about the fight sequences in "Shades". Firstly, being a super hero story at heart (and a long one at that!), there are going to be quite a few of them and so I was determined to try to make each fight sequence different from the others. In this one (which, surprisingly perhaps, is the the first in the book!) I therefore had Starflower make maximum use of the intruders' own ropes.
Secondly, there was the question of dialogue. The two most common ways of dealing with fight dialogue are to have none (leaving the reader with several pages of beautifully drawn panels which can be removed from the comic without anyone noticing their absence from the story) or to have the combatants exchange a series of rather unlikely one-liners and insults (soooo 1960s!) What I wanted was to include dialogue but only insofar as it would add something either to our understanding of the characters or to the plot development. On this page at least, I think we succeeded!
