Before we get into the story itself, a note on the title ... "The Spires" is obviously taken from the cityscape (gloriously illustrated by Fabrizio on Page 1!)

The cityscape itself was the first part of the story to take shape in my head. I knew I wanted this to be a fantasy story but I was just as determined that the backdrop for the action should bear no resemblance to the fairy-tale worlds of Tolkien or the Brothers Grimm.

I wanted something classical and I envisioned the architecture of the great Gothic cathedrals of Mediaeval Europe but built so high that - using the materials of our world - it would have collapsed under its own weight.

Fabrizio has retained the Gothic theme in the wonderful pointed arches but has also built the city with clean classical lines, reminiscent of ancient Rome. Mobrak is lucky to be in the hands of such a skilled architect!
